There is a certain pleasure to be found in gazing out the window, at an ever changing view. And one thing that Bute is never short on, is beautiful views. Although I find that every window in my flat offers a delightful vista, there is something about the rear window that I have always found particularly captivating.
At times, I have simply sat at my kitchen bench, looking out and letting the views just soak in. I sit there, cup of tea in hand, pondering my life and that of my ancestors. This is particularly easy to do when I can see many of my ancestors' former dwellings from that vantage point. Sometimes my imagination takes me into the deep history of Bute, which is greatly helped by looking at the Rothesay castle (dating back to the 13th century), easily visible from the rear window.
When I bought my flat and had my very first look inside, I was absolutely thrilled with the views. In fact, the re-design of the kitchen, bathroom and main bedroom all focused on maximising the outlook. And a viewing bench along the kitchen window was installed for that very purpose, with the relocation of the sink easily providing space for two stools.
You can see the journey of the rear window in my kitchen has been extensive, but absolutely worth it in the end.
And it would appear that my fascination with the ever changing view from the rear window is shared with my visitors. The gallery of photos continues to grow, showcasing the seasons, sunsets and natural beauty of Bute.
As I start to turn my mind toward my next visit, I can't help but wonder how the view will look from the rear window in December. No doubt magical, with the spirit of Christmas and winter on display. I can't wait to return and spend some time there!
There are many famous quotes in Hitchcock's crticially acclaimed film, "Rear Window". One of my favourites is: "Maybe one day she'll find her happiness". And in the case of my rear window, perhaps I have.
